On March 8, 2025, the Sunshine Coast Labour Council will commemorate International Women’s Day by drawing attention to the disproportionate impacts of the affordability crisis on women and gender-diverse individuals. The theme of this year’s campaign will continue the momentum of last year’s focus: Rise Up for Gender Justice.
As we approach the spring federal election, it is crucial to acknowledge that women—particularly Indigenous, Black, racialized, newcomer, young, 2SLGBTQI+ women, and women with disabilities—are facing the hardest challenges in the current economic climate. With rising costs and persistent inequalities, too many women are trapped in precarious, low-wage employment or struggling to make ends meet.
In the face of these challenges, women across Canada are Rising Up to demand a more equitable future. The Sunshine Coast Labour Council is proud to stand in solidarity with women across the nation, demanding that political parties seeking workers’ votes take meaningful action to address the systemic barriers women and gender-diverse people face in the workplace and society.
“We need to see gender equity and women’s economic justice become central components of every political platform,” said Miyuki Shinkai, President of the Sunshine Coast Labour Council. “Now, more than ever, is the time for change.”
To mark this day of action and solidarity, the Sunshine Coast Labour Council will host its annual International Women’s Day Multicultural Potluck on Saturday, March 8, 2025, from 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM at Roberts Creek Community Hall. This year’s event will feature a dynamic blend of speakers, performances, and community engagement. Honourable Randene Neill, Minister of Water, Land and Resource Stewardship, and several other local activist speakers will address the crowd. Attendees will also participate in a Zumba dance demo with Argentine instructor Giuliana, enjoy local musical talent, and explore displays from community organizations.
“We are excited to bring our community together to celebrate diversity, promote gender justice, and take action to address the urgent challenges women face,” added Shinkai.
The event is free and open to all members of the public, with a special emphasis on multiculturalism and multigenerational participation. The Sunshine Coast Labour Council invites all community members to join in and Rise Up for Gender Justice.
